Dry needling is a modern, science-based intervention for pain and dysfunction in musculoskeletal conditions. It is a lot more than sticking needles in trigger points, and it is not acupuncture.
How it works
Thin filiform needles are placed into myofascial trigger points, tendons, ligaments, musculotendinous junctions, bone (periosteal pecking), or near nerves to stimulate a healing response.
Performed to improve microcirculation and disrupt fibrosis in chronic neurogenic pain syndromes.
Brain imaging studies show needling key distal points, not just trigger points, stimulates the descending pain-inhibitory systems and the cortical areas involved in pain control.
Dry needling is not acupuncture or Oriental Medicine. It is a physical therapy technique grounded in Western anatomy and research.
Temporary pain during needling happens in 60 to 70% of treatments. Minor bleeding or bruising afterward happens in 15 to 20% and is normal.
Expect soreness for 5 to 7 days with a minimal to moderate reduction in pain inside that window.
Conditions
We also run electrical dry needling protocols for lateral epicondylitis and plantar fasciitis.
